Investigating Two Contradictory Views of Formative Measurement in Information Systems Research
نویسندگان
چکیده
Initially candidate survey items were compiled from existing literature and presented on a seven-point Likert scale. Then the survey items were filtered through several iterations of pretests. First, these items were examined by a focus group. This group consisted of three colleagues who are knowledgeable about the research subject as well as the measurement theory, and five senior IT managers with practical knowledge in IT infrastructure. This group of people met three times to examine the content validity of the research instrument during the two week period. Each time they met, the participants gradually reduced the items through intensive discussions. Second, the revised questionnaire was pretested with 20 senior IT managers. Each participant was asked to complete the questionnaire and, during the debriefing period, to offer any suggestions for improvement. Again, from this process, four survey items were dropped and several minor refinements on the remaining items were made. Third, the revised questionnaires were mailed to another group of 20 senior managers for a pilot test. Follow-up interviews with 20 respondents did not indicate any need for substantive changes to the questionnaire. This seemed to indicate strong preliminary evidence of construct validity. Survey items used for this research and their sources are listed next.

Advancing Formative Measurement Models
Formative measurement models were first introduced in the literature more than forty years ago and the discussion about their methodological contribution has been increasing since the 1990s. However, the use of formative indicators for construct measurement in empirical studies is still scarce. This paper seeks to encourage the thoughtful application of formative models by (a) highlighting the ...
متن کاملSpecifying Formative Constructs in Information Systems Research
While researchers go to great lengths to justify and prove theoretical links between constructs, the relationship between measurement items and constructs is often ignored. By default, the relationship between construct and item is assumed to be reflective, meaning that the measurement items Carol Saunders was the accepting senior editor for this paper. Traci Carte was the associate editor. Ron...

Introduction: Users of Hospital Information Systems use these systems, round o`clock and as such perceive their problems better than others. Investigating views of users are very critical in development of performance of the systems and should be effective in their development. The aim of this study was to investigate the users' views about Hospital Information System in teaching hospitals (Ma...
متن کاملExploring Characteristics Of Expertise In Information Systems
Experts’ views and commentary have been highly respected in every discipline. However, unlike traditional disciplines like medicine, mathematics and engineering, Information System (IS) expertise is difficult to define. This paper attempts to understand the characteristics of IS-expert through a comprehensive literature review of analogous disciplines and then derives a formative research model...
